NASS News: NASS Announces $167,840 in Research Grants Awards

The North American Spine Society (NASS) announced the winners of its 2022 Research Grants during its 37th Annual Meeting last week in Chicago. These grants provide funding for promising projects by qualified investigators in spine care.

Since 1989, NASS has funded more than $4.4 million in grants for spine-related research. A total of $167,840 was awarded to this year’s recipients based on scientific merit, significance of the project, approach and feasibility. Winners were selected by the NASS Research Funding Committee and Evidence Analysis & Research Council, and approved by the NASS Executive Committee.

The 2022 Research Grant award winners are:

• Translational: Can Personalized Blood Biomarkers Detect Residual Disease in Surgically Treated Chordoma? A Pilot Study
  Principal Investigator: Raphaële Charest-Morin, M.D.
  Amount: $36,689
• Young Investigator – Basic: Heterotopic Ossification Induced by Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury: A New Approach to Prophylaxis and Treatment
  Principal Investigator: Chan Gao, M.D., Ph.D.
  Amount: $42,900
• Young Investigator – Translational: Development of a Liquid Biopsy for Spinal Cord Compression
  Principal Investigator: Tej Azad, M.D., MS
  Amount: $39,201
• Young Investigator – Clinical: Investigating Intrinsic Spinal Cord Stress in Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy Using Patient-Specific 3D Modeling
  Principal Investigator: Aditya Vedantam, M.D.
  Amount: $49,050
